A TOTAL of 483 students from three universities in Guangzhou will provide interpretation service of non-English foreign languages for foreign guests at the Shenzhen Universiade from Aug. 7.

The students will translate for French, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean guests along with volunteers from Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao, yesterday’s Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

They were from South China Normal University, Zhongshan University and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. They were chosen from more than 1,000 applicants through a series of examinations and interviews, the newspaper said.

Most of the volunteers worked at the Guangzhou Asian Games last year.

They will work at the Universiade for about 20 days and live at student dormitories at Shenzhen Polytechnic in Nanshan District. They will take Games-designated buses to work each day to ensure their safety, yesterday’s Nanfang Daily reported.

“I am very proud to be a volunteer for the Universiade. I hope I can introduce Shenzhen and China to the world with what I’ve learned,” said Huang Jiaheng, a student in the French department at South China Normal University.

Huang started preparing for yesterday’s interview in Guangzhou a month ago. “I always wanted to be a volunteer. I had to give up the Asian Games because of busy study, so I applied immediately when the Universiade started recruiting volunteers,” he said.

The Universiade will recruit more than 500 volunteer interpreters in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao.
