Spring Cocoon to host first competition

A TOTAL of 151 table tennis players from 23 countries and regions have registered to compete in the 2011 Volkswagen China Open at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, also known as the Spring Cocoon, between June 15 and 19.

The China Open, a leg of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) tour, is also the highest-level competition to test the efficiency of the Universiade venues.

Top seeds including Wang Hao, Ma Lin, Xu Xin, Liu Shiwen, Guo Yue and foreign players including Jun Mizutani from Japan and Feng Tianwei from Singapore will compete. The events include the men’s and women’s singles, under-21 men’s and women’s singles and mixed doubles, the organizer, Shenzhen 2011 Summer Universiade Executive Office, told a news conference yesterday.

The Open is being organized by the ITTF and the Chinese Table Tennis Association.

Tickets are priced between 120 and 680 yuan (US$18-103) and are available at www.damai.cn, www.piao.com.cn. Bookings can be also made by calling 400-610-3721.

Tickets are available at ticket offices at the OCT Huaxia Arts Center, Poly Theater, Children’s Palace and Shenzhen Concert Hall.

The Nanshan venue has been chosen for the Universiade opening and closing ceremonies. All table tennis competitions from preliminaries to finals will be held at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center.
