Speech of Wang Rong, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, Secretary of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee
(April 15, 2011)

Respected Lin Musheng, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province;
Respected FISU Delegates;
Dear Friends,

We gather here tonight to celebrate the completion of the Universiade Center and the Universiade Village. On behalf of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, I would like to extend our warmest welcome to our distinguished guests. I would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported and participated in the construction of the venues for the Shenzhen Universiade through their tremendous efforts.
The Universiade is a celebration for youth, and Shenzhen is a young city. When youth meet, they ignite passion. Let’s write a new chapter of our dreams. As Univerisade Shenzhen 2011 approaches, we are becoming more and more excited about the Games. Together with the young people of the world, we look forward to achieving our core principle: “Start here—Make a difference!”
—— “Start here—Make a difference!” reflects the pursuit of “harmony in diversity” in Chinese culture, which values cultural diversity of all countries and regions and advocates equal exchanges and harmony among peoples of different religious and cultural backgrounds.
——“Start here—Make a difference!” highlights the individuality and diverse choices of young people from different countries and regions. Inspired by the richness of youth and the world, different cultures will meet by the ocean in Shenzhen. When such an event for youth is hosted by a young city, the vigor of the city will give life to the dreams of youth.
——“Start here—Make a difference!” reminds people of Shenzhen’s key feature: Shenzhen preserves Chinese traditions, and with its creativity and modernity, Shenzhen also epitomizes the new China. The Universiade provides a platform for Shenzhen to show its vitality, creativity and cultural appeal.
——“Start here—Make a difference!” means that Shenzhen, established as the first “special economic zone”, takes a different approach to the organization of the Games. The Shenzhen Universiade will be simple and economical; it will make the best possible use of its characteristics as a sea-side city with much green space. Its Opening Ceremony will focus more on sports.

The Universiade Center and the Universiade Village are the main new venues for the Shenzhen Universiade, as well as the new symbols of Shenzhen. This Completion Ceremony tonight demonstrates the great progress that Shenzhen has achieved, as well as the warm welcome we extend to all the people of the world.

In 119 days, the flame of the 26th Summer Universiade will be lit in Shenzhen. At that time, we will realize our passion and dreams and fulfill our duties and commitments.

During the final stages, we will install the equipment in the venues, improve the environment, complete the transportation infrastructure, and raise the city’s quality of life, so as to provide the best possible conditions for the Universiade.

With great care and responsibility, we will organize the competitions, guarantee the quality of the services, promote the Shenzhen Universiade, and develop the security command system, so as to provide strong organizational support for the Games.

With great enthusiasm and in the spirit of harmony, we will improve volunteer services, raise the quality of our work, enhance civility, so as create a harmonious and cultured environment for the Games.

“Start here—Make a difference!”

We look forward to seeing all of you during Universiade Shenzhen 2011!
