On the afternoon of July 12, the “Green Universiade 2010 the fifth university cartoon competition on environmental protection”, jointly hosted by China Daily and the Organizing Committee of the 26th Shenzhen Summer Universiade, was officially launched in Tibet University. At the top of the world, the organizers of the competition called on university students throughout the world to play the young people’s imagination to show up the worsening global ecological environment, in the way of cartoons. At the same time raising people’s concern about environmental protection, the participants are expected to take action to cherish the natural environment.
As told, the university cartoon competition on environmental protection launched by China Daily, has been held for four times since 2006. An increasing number of students have been participating in the competition. With the involvement of students from more than 100 universities nationwide like Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, and Fudan University, more than 10,000 cartoons were received in the previous competitions. There were a thousand excellent cartoon works, among which 20 percent came from the countries and regions other that China, showing the competition’s increasing impact among the university students around the globe.
The international university cartoon competition has acquired the participation and support of well – known environmental protection institutions and cartoon associations, such as the UN Environment Program, the World Wildlife Fund, China and the EU Biological Diversity Programs, China Environmental Protection Foundation and China News Comic Seminar. The competition of this year is jointly undertaken by chinadaily.com.cn and 21st Century.
Under the theme of “blue sky and green Universiade –-- UU loves the earth”, students are encouraged to work on their cartoons on the basis of the Universiade mascot “UU”. They are asked to recreate UU in various circumstances, for the purpose of disseminating the environmental protection among the worldwide university students and spreading the notion of “Green Universiade”, with implicative or exaggerated expression. All of the environment – friendly cartoon lovers, whether postgraduates, undergraduates, college students or visiting students, can contribute their cartoon works.
The competition begins on July 12 and ends on October 31. All the candidates can submit cartoons on the official website of the competition, by email or by post. The entries will be selected and decided by a judging committee made up of environmental protection institutions, cartoon makers, and professors, and the award ceremony will be held in December.
Deputy Director of the Universiade Executive Office Zhao Guanghua addressed the ceremony. He said, since Shenzhen’s successful bidding for the 26th Summer Universiade in January of 2007, we have impelled all the city field of endeavor to prepare for the Universiade, under the guidance of municipal government’s principle of “hosting the Universiade to show up a new Shenzhen”. From August 12 to 23, there will be 13,000 athletes, coaches and team officials from over 180 countries and regions coming to Shenzhen, to compete for 24 sports 306 gold medals. A university sports gala is right here waiting for the young students coming from the world to Shenzhen. In a “Green Universiade” demand originally raised by Shenzhen in its preparatory work, energy conservation and emission reduction, environment pollution control and ecology construction have been quantized into 11 specific measures. From 2009 to 2011, citizens have seen strengthened environmental quality inspection, reduced harmful emissions, and hundreds of electric – powered BYD taxis running on the streets. All these show the world Shenzhen, an international garden city and a livable, harmonious, green metroplis.
In Ms. Yang Chunya’s speech, the Deputy Chief Editor of chinadaily.com.cn commented, “What our purpose and our expectation of the competition is to influence the university students, the most active social communication group in a way of cartoons, and thus attract widespread attention on environmental protection”. As one of the Universiade official cooperative media group, China Daily will work together with the Universiade to make a more overall, more diverse and more original cartoon competition, so as to let more students in the world know Shenzhen’s devotion and endeavor in preparing for the “Green Universiade” and welcome the opening of the 2011 Universiade2011, she added.
On behalf of the Universiade Executive Office, Zhao Guanghua conferred a Shenzhen Universiade volunteer Zhou Ziqian with an “Environmental Protection Angel” certificate, for his cycling trip to Lhasa. Starting from Shenzhen on April 1, April Fools’ Day, Zhou managed to get to Lhasa after covering 7,000 kilometers in 100 days on his bike. Of course, Zhou is not a fool. On the contrary, his trip for advocating going in a low – carbon way stroke a chord with the university students and won people’s support on his journey. So far, he has collected more than 500 smiling faces for the Shenzhen University, and then he will soon on his bike again to begin a solo cycling along the border.
On the occasion, Chinese famous cartoonist Gao Zanmin drew a cartoon, which reflects an organic combination of sports and environmental protection, to open the competition. His skills and humors in the picture won applause of the students present from Art Institute of Tibet University.
