NEWSPAPERS under the Shenzhen Press Group were praised for their reporting of the Shenzhen Universiade and promotion of Shenzhen to the world at a meeting that concluded Monday September 26.

During the Universiade, which was held in August, Chinese-language newspapers under the Shenzhen Press Group had a combined total of 1,322 full pages of coverage, more than 5,000 photos and an average of 6,091 stories about the event, the meeting said.

At the meeting, Wang Jingsheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC and also chief of the city’s publicity department, said both local and State-level media groups were responsible for creating a unique Universiade.

During the Universiade, Shenzhen Daily, the only English-language newspaper in Shenzhen, was given the task of promoting the Universiade to overseas readers.

During the build-up, Shenzhen Daily published the biweekly 16-page Universiade Express. The copies, 10 in total, introduced the city’s preparations, volunteer service, life in Shenzhen and features about past host cities and athletes. The newspaper was delivered to foreign communities, airports and five-star hotels in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Between Aug. 3 and 24, Shenzhen Daily published the 16-page Universiade News five times a week. The reports covered various topics including ceremonies, competitions, and stories from inside the athletes’ village.

Wang Rong, the city’s Party chief, praised the achievement and the unique role that the media had played during the Universiade.

The Universiade attracted more media interest than any other event in Shenzhen’s history. A total of 3,156 reporters from 331 media organizations covered the event, whose opening ceremony attracted a television audience of 300 million in 70 countries and regions.
