Shenzhen has set up a comprehensive public health network, with city, district and community public health institutions. By the end of 2009, the city had a total of 2,600 medical institutions (including 625 community health centers), with over 20,000 beds and 63,000 medical personnel.

Medical Institutions

Shenzhen People's Hospital

Built in 1946, Shenzhen's largest hospital originated from the Bao'an County People's Hospital and has been developed into a modern comprehensive hospital combining medical services, teaching, scientific research and health care. It features complete functions, advanced equipment, rational talent structure and strong technical power.

Shenzhen No. 2 People's Hospital

With 1,008 beds, the hospital is equipped with high-tech equipment such as MRI, DSA, spiral CT and color ultrasonic, some of which are the most advanced in the world. It has the largest number of key and specialized medical units of all city hospitals.

Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital

This modern, comprehensive hospital was built by the Shenzhen Municipal Government at a cost of 450 million yuan in cooperation with Beijing University. Within the management network of hospitals affiliated with Beijing University, it is one of the most influential medical institutions in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital

A large, comprehensive hospital for traditional Chinese medicine, it combines medical services, teaching, scientific research, disease prevention, health care and medical rehabilitation. It is the only national and provincial demonstration hospital for traditional Chinese medicine and the only national 3A-rated hospital for traditional Chinese medicine in Shenzhen. It has been awarded the title of "Famed Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Guangdong" by the Guangdong Provincial Government.

Food Safety

In recent years, the Shenzhen Municipal Government has upgraded food safety monitoring. Food safety levels have been greatly improved and residents have a stronger sense of safety in food consumption. The city's food and drink industry and all public canteens have adopted a classified management system of food safety. The Shenzhen Municipal Government has formulated a three-year food safety plan (2009-2011) in an effort to forge a safety network from food sources to distribution and consumption.

Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment

The city is conducting a campaign to prevent the spread of occupational diseases in certain industries and groups that are prone to disease. The campaign is also cracking down on illegal operations that seriously damage the health of employees. The city is also conducting a pilot project involving basic occupational health in industrial zones and offering a broad range of occupational health services with access to all employees.
