A WOMAN set a record recently by delivering a baby weighing 6.1 kilograms at birth at a Shenzhen hospital.

    The newborn was much larger than an average newborn, which weighs normally about 4 kg, a local Chinese-language newspaper reported yesterday.

    Doctors at Shekou People's Hospital in Nanshan District delivered the baby by Cesarean section at 4 a.m. last Monday, the Daily Sunshine reported yesterday. The mother, in her 30s, is a native of Jiangxi Province.

    Doctors remind pregnant women not to over-eat to avoid producing overweight babies. Pregnancy diabetes was also a factor in the rapid growth of the baby in womb.

    Doctors urge pregnant women to have regular medical checks and follow their doctors' advice.
