Project Care kicks off
DATA: 2007-01-23

SHENZHEN’S annual Project Care was launched across the city’s six districts yesterday morning in a bid to help impoverished families and disadvantaged groups.

Nearly 800 themed activities will be organized by more than 100 government agencies, communities and companies in the next three to four months to show care to less fortunate people in the city.

At the launch ceremony attended by senior Shenzhen officials, Party chief Li Hongzhong recalled the line of a song.

“If everyone offers a bit of love, this world will become a nice place for people,” he said, adding it is a song that leaves the strongest impression on him.

In Futian District, goods, including quilts and food, were donated to 20 impoverished families. Two local firms donated 400,000 yuan (US$51,000) to the project. Another 10 firms set up booths to recruit employees, while free legal lectures and physical checkups are also being offered. In the Honey Lake Community, Mayor Xu Zongheng handed out books, festival goods and cash to more than 300 poor families.

In Luohu, care is being extended to the elderly and single mothers. One featured activity in Nanshan District has 100 volunteers sorting out people’s computer problems.

Project Care has been organized in Shenzhen for the past three years.

Tens of millions people have participated in its activities, donating a total of 114 million yuan.(Li Dan)
