It is estimated that almost 20,000 athletes, officials and reporters from more than 180 countries and regions are coming to the Universiade to be held in Shenzhen. Taking the advantage of Hong Kong’s full-blown and far-ranging volunteer resources, the Universiade is planning to recruit a batch of high – quality games – time volunteers from Hong Kong, to serve the participants who come to the games via the airport and ports in Hong Kong.

On April 21, 2010, headed by Vice Chairperson of the Executive Committee and Director-general of the Executive Office Liang Daoxing, a party of thirteen persons comprised of leaders of the Executive Office and the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLA) called at Liaison Office of the Central Government in the S.A.R. and Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau. That is why the Executive Office came to Liaison Office of the Central Government in the S.A.R. and Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau to discuss about the cooperation with volunteers from Hong Kong. Most of the volunteers to be enrolled are to serve the athletes and officials who are coming to Shenzhen through Hong Kong Airport, Huanggang Checkpoint and Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint. Others will be volunteering the competition venues in Shenzhen.

Han Shuxia, Deputy Secretary-general of Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau Lei Jieyu said at the conversazione, they will be backing Shenzhen’s effort to host the 2011 Universiade, especially in the area of organizing volunteer teams from Hong Kong. Liaison Office of the Central Government in the S.A.R. and Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau both nominated Hong Kong Volunteers Association, an organization who owns lots of volunteering experience with events, to take the charge of organizing volunteers and voluntary work. Leaders from both Shenzhen and Hong Kong all agreed that they will further enhance communication and coordination, having detailed discussion on issues like the volunteer recruitment schedule, the number of volunteers to be enrolled, the volunteers’ working positions, and the volunteers’ qualification check.
