SHENZHEN, 22 Aug. - Russia seized their second gold in men's Universiade volleyball with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14) victory against Ukraine at Shenzhen Gymnasium on Monday.
"I am very happy that we can get the gold medal at this Universiade. All of the competitors are very strong, but there is only one gold," said head coach Yuri PANCHENKO (RUS) in the press conference held after the gold medal match.
"I thank China for holding such a successful tournament. It doesn't matter who won; what matters is everyone strived for their best.
The Russian side prevailed be utilising their powerful artillery from both flanks, while the key to Russia's win over Ukraine was their excellent floor defence.
Ukraine was forced to settle for the silver medal, but were pleased with their best showing in Universiade men's volleyball.
"We got silver and we are very happy about that. We won it because of our hard work and persperation.
"Today we fought against such a strong opponent and we were very excited. We are very happy," said Sergei SKRYPKA (UKR).
Brazil headed into the men's competition in search for gold but were content with bronze after beating Canada 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 25-19).
"We came here for the gold medal, and while we leave with bronze we are so happy because during the Universiade we learned a lot," said key hitter Luiz FONTELES (BRA) after Brazil's victory over the Canadians.
